it's an amazing short film which is to my mind an impossible format to do

Circumference is a dark comedy that explores the cyclical journey of a man's failed marriage and the realization that sometimes you only get one shot to make things right.

Crazy8s is a Canadian competition that invites 80 directors and gives them each 5 minutes and a single sheet of paper to be used in any way to promote your pitch to a panel of judges. This was ours. From those, they select 8 projects to be completely made within an 8 day timeline with a provided $800 budget and a maximum of only 30 minutes of raw footage is allowed to be used. The films & filmmakers meet on the morning of the 9th day to submit their films and a week later they are screened at the Seymour Centre in front of 3000+ people.

Circumference was selected and began production May 26th, 2006 and was delivered June 2nd as a 10 minute single shot, multiple location short film along with a corresponding music video for the song "Misguided" by Marnie Mains. As the shooting schedule and raw footage cap were so tight, there was only time for one take for each section of the video which places Mains within the film and interacting with the chracters.

The chords and melodies from Mains' song were replicated and re-arranged for an original score written and performed by the director. This was the first and only time in the contest's 11 year history that a film and a music video had been completed at the same time within the contest guidelines.

A documentary called Hat Trick was shot by Jeffrey Zablotny which follows the Circumference team from pitch to project premiere as the 8 days progress despite press appearances, mispainted green doors and a double booked music concert.
